Apicectomy with retrograde filling
Figure: X-ray of a central incisor with an apical cyst and X-ray after the removal of the cyst, apicectomy and retrograde filling.
Apicectomy (root end resection) is the surgical removal of the tip of the root of a tooth, in order to preserve the tooth in the dental arch.
Sometimes, even after a successful conservative endodontic treatment (root canal treatment), symptoms remain in the tooth (fistula, apical lesion, apical cyst) and the apicectomy is indicated.
The aim of this surgical procedure is the removal of the tip of the root, the surgical cleaning of the space around the resected root and the retrograde filling of the remaining tooth with special bioactive material.
